Groundwater management

Almadius, a multidisciplinary design and engineering office, specializes in groundwater management . As part of your project, we provide you with our expertise for various issues related to groundwater.

Grounwater: a resource to be protected

Groundwater constitutes a valuable natural reserve. However, these aquifers are particularly threatened by pollution from surface water and industries and by our consumption patterns which overexploit them. To preserve this resource, it is therefore essential to manage groundwater responsibly.

Understanding groundwater to better anticipate the future

Whatever the project related to groundwater, we start with the analysis of the functioning and characteristics of the groundwater. The origin of the water, its destination and its flow velocity are essential parameters for carrying out any project having an influence on groundwater.

To do this, we perform several types of studies with a series of tests whose aim is to calculate all these parameters. Depending on the results, we size and calculate using formulas or 3D hydrological models.

Our groundwater expertise

Polluted sites and soils

On polluted sites and soils, we analyze the mechanisms by which pollution occurs. We evaluate the functioning of the pollutants present, their desorption, their degradation , their interaction with the water table or even their dispersion . This study allows a better understanding of the behavior of a pollution in groundwater, to identify the presence of a possible risk and to develop a remediation plan.

Using 2D or 3D modeling tools, we reproduce the past in order to anticipate the future and evaluate the effects of remediation techniques on pollution or refine the assessment of migration risks.

Potable water

We carry out water resources studies, both qualitative and quantitative. We estimate the capacities of aquifers, critical pumping rates and evaluate anthropogenic pressures on the quality and sustainability of resources, on the scale of a geological basin, as well as a single well.

For the detection of aquifer zones and the sizing of collection wells, we analyze the characteristics of groundwater. We evaluate the feasibility of implementing catchment wells based on water flow and interaction with possible other users present on the same aquifer. After sizing of the work, we supervise the drilling and perform geochemical and hydrogeological tests, allowing the confirmation of  the hypotheses which allowed the sizing.

Finally, we prepare permit applications and follow-up to ensure the smooth running of the project.

Prevention zone

We determine the catchment prevention zones in Wallonia. To do this, we create a numerical 3D model of the flows, simulate in 3D the theoretical transfer of pollution in a given area and determine the time necessary to reach the collection well. We thus delimit a prevention zone in which the installation of certain activities is prohibited or regulated.

Site groundwater management

Certain activities, mainly real estate construction projects, but also quarries or civil engineering projects, require groundwater pumping (drawdown). We prepare permit applications in this regard. To obtain it, your installation must not be a source of settlement, pollution or hindrance for any other activity.

We make models hydrogeological or use formulas to calculate the appropriate pumping rate and the influence of this on other users of the aquifers, but also the nearby natural areas or the risks of settlement. We help selecting the most optimal drawdown techniques, while offering a transversal vision on other construction site issues, such as soil pollution, stability/geotechnical measures or rainwater management.

Finally, we design passive drains allowing the passage of groundwater when it is obstructed by structures under the water table.

International development projects

We carry out groundwater management projects abroad : groundwater safety study, integrated basin management and identification of new resources, pumping sizing, etc.

FAQ: Groundwater Management

How does good groundwater management help protect aquifers?

K
L

Good groundwater management helps to protect groundwater from pollution and overexploitation to ensure its sustainability.

What are the pollutants of groundwater?

K
L

Groundwater pollution can come from various sources : industrial spills, agriculture, defective sanitation systems, etc. If they are not managed upstream with a suitable sanitation project , these pollutants can infiltrate into groundwater and have a lasting impact on resources.

What is an aquifer?

K
L

An aquifer is an area below the surface that stores groundwater . It is a natural water reservoir . These aquifers play a role in the hydrological cycle and are a source of water supply for various uses: domestic, industrial, agricultural, etc.
